This English or French sewing & vanity box dates to the late Georgian/early Victorian era. It is made of mahogany inlaid with burlwood and beautiful Oriental themed marquetry. The front of the box is fitted with a locking mechanism and has its original key.
The interior is lined in deep purple velvet and silk and includes a mirror and 2 fragrance bottles. The bottles are not marked but are likely Baccarat. There are various pockets for storage and 4 pin cushions. Originally there would have been a set of sewing implements that would have been fitted into the box.
These boxes were made for the elite to purchase as souvenirs while traveling abroad during this time period. They served to store all the necessities of the day and also a place where you could lock your valuables.
The box measures 10.5” x 7.5” and is 4.5” tall.
There is age related wear to the box including wear to the interior finishes, small cracks on the lid and 1 large crack across the bottom. That being said the box is well constructed and still solid.
The perfume bottles have wear to the gilt decoration and there is a chip on the upper rim of one of the them. They are otherwise in good condition.
Although the box still retains its key, it does not lock anymore. The key turns in the lock but it does not catch.
Beautiful one of a kind box!
